Raptors in autumn migration (2)

Late Sept.2014
Laotieshan, Lushun 旅順老鐵山

On the 1st day of our arrival which was a cloudy day, the most spectacular scene there was the large number of Crested Honey Buzzards 鳳頭蜂鷹   hoovering in the sky. There were several waves in the afternoon with more than a hundred CHB in each wave. We reckoned there were about 1,500 CHB flew over the mountain in the afternoon. On the next 2 sunny days, the raptors were seen much higher in the sky.

Other than raptors, there were also many bird species passing through Laotieshan.

The first bird is a juvenile female Eurasian Sparrowhawk. Sex from the size of bill (female is up to twice as heavy as male, but the size diffence is not normally apparent in photos) and age mainly from rufous-fringed upperparts.

Young Northern Goshawk has underparts of the body streaked, not barred. Adults has more uniform, somewhat bluish upperparts and more finely barred underparts, less distinctly banded wing-feathers,  thicker rear-body and proportionally larger head.

Laotieshan seems to be a very interesting place.

AjaA, thank you for your comments.
I was misled by the raptor's large open fan tail & its well-developed breast to ID it as Northern Goshawk !
BTW, the raptor in the 4th photo was a different one from the first 3 photos.

Illegal bird trapping at this site was report on CCTV news several days ago.  That is very exciting to me.  It seems the tide is changing.  Bird conservation is gaining momentum these days.
