16/10/08 Tai Po Kau Highlights

Greetings all,

From 630am to 1130am I birded the Nature Trail and the Red/Blue trails, and along with most of the usual birds, I had one great find and one close runner-up, along with several honorable mentions:

- 3 Bay Woodpeckers! (I first heard one calling at the junction where you can split off from the nature trail onto the yellow/brown walks.  I finally located the bird, only to have it fly off.  However, it didn't go too far and it met up with two of its friends, so I wasn't too upset.  Very noisy and amusing and beautiful birds.)
- 1 Ashy (White-cheeked) Drongo (Seen perched atop a tree branch just off the nature trail, near the beginning of the ascent.  Quite striking with the pure white "cheek".)
- Also, 1 Scarlet Minivet, several Grey-throated Minivets, 2 Mountain Tailorbirds, a couple of Pygmy Wren Babblers, 1 Grey-cheeked Fulvetta, 1 Yellow-browed Warbler, 6 Greater Necklaced Laughingthrush, 1 Black-throated Laughingthrush, a couple of Hwamei, and a couple of Red-billed Leiothrix.

Good birding,
Wes Homoya
