The IUCN Red List has been revised recently and there is one change relating to us:


Baikal Teal: Vulnerable to Least Concern.


It means it is no longer 'threatened'.

In case of member's interesting to know all the threatened and near-threatened bird species recorded in Hong Kong, I list all these species below:

CR = critically endangered, EN = endangered, VU = vulnerable, NT = Near threatened

Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Christmas Island Frigatebird

Baer's Pochard, Oriental Stork, Japanese Night-heron, Black-faced Spoonbill, Nordmann's Greenshank

Greater Spotted Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Great Knot, Swinhoe's Egret, Yellow-breasted Bunting, Japanese Yellow Bunting, Relict Gull, Saunders's Gull, Styan's Grasshopper Warbler, Eastern Curlew, Dalmatian Pelican, Fairy Pitta, Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher

NT
Cinereous Vulture, Falcated Duck, Collared Crow, Rufous-rumped Grassbird, Asian Dowitcher, Black-tailed Godwit, Eurasian Curlew, Japanese Paradise-flycatcher, Black-headed Ibis.

This is a fascinating list.  I would not have guessed some of these birds such as Yellow-breasted Bunting are vulnerable or threatened.

Lesser White-fronted Goose

It always interests me that such a small place as HK has such a large list of threatened species, compared to Europe or N America. I think this reveals how important HK is for birds, but also how threatened many birds are in Asia!

Japanese Quail has also been listed as "Near Threatened" since 2010.
