AFCD’s egretry survey found that the number of nests increased from over 600 in 2000 to 1017 in 2006.  However, the number of breeding Night Herons have reduced by over 50% during the same period.  Experts suspect that the birds were driven away by environmental changes in Deep Bay.  Other Ardeidaes are also under pressure from urbanization, as indicated by shrinking and fragmenting egretries.

香 港 留 鳥 夜 鷺 一 度 在 本 地 鷺 鳥 繁 殖 榜 上 排 名 第 二 ， 近 年 卻 地 位 不 保 ， 六 年 內 逾 半 數 夜 鷺 的 家 園 神 秘 消 失 ， 變 成 不 歸 之 鷺 。 專 家 懷 疑 是 后 海 灣 環 境 的 變 遷 ， 趕 走 了 這 種 生 性 獨 特 的 鷺 鳥 。 其 他 品 種 的 本 地 鷺 鳥 也 承 受 著 都 市 發 展 的 壓 力 ， 牠 們 的 育 嬰 院 ， 規 模 變 得 越 來 越 小 ， 且 有 化 整 為 零 的 趨 勢 。

Without further detail, how do we reconcile

'the number of nests increased from over 600 in 2000 to 1017 in 2006'

with

'as indicated by shrinking and fragmenting egretries' ??

This newspaper article is not very helpful.
