Subject: Probable Ijima's Warbler [Print This Page]

Author: wgeoff    Time: 30/03/2015 11:05     Subject: Probable Ijima's Warbler

A probable Ijima's Warbler was photographed yesterday on Po Toi by Wing Yiu Yam.

This looks superficially like an Eastern Crowned Warbler but without the darker crown markings and the pale crown stripe.
Perhaps Paul Leader would like to comment.

This is a potential first record for Hong Kong, congratulations to Yiu for taking these very clear photos and realising what it could be.

As there were many observers on Po Toi yesterday, perhaps there are other photographs. The bird was in the tall trees past the restaurant going towards the temple, approximately behind the Community Centre.

congratulations to the one who discovered it...great looking bird!

Whilst superficially similar to Eastern Crowned, the grey head, weak supercilium and eyes stripe lack of a central crown stripe are typical of Ijima's leaf warbler. A great looking bird, and great photos. Well done indeed!

I took these pictures yesterday also at Po Toi Island near the pier but not sure if it is the same one.

Start by comparing the colour of the your bird with the Ijima's Warbler.

The colour of mine looks more brownish. Can you help to identify mine?

Yours is a Bush Warbler. Probably Manchurian.

Here some more amazing photos of the Ijima's from Wing Yiu Yam

I don't know if the faint yellow wash down the centre of the breast (photo 2 here) is distinctive of Ijima's but I have noticed it on some Ijima's OBI photos.

Yes Wallace, you have it.

Your photos show very well the features mentioned by Paul Leader above - a superficial resemblance to Eastern Crowned Warbler in the body but a very different head pattern, grey head with no central crown stripe, weak eye-stripe and thin supercilium, also the white eye-ring and pinkish lower mandible in your third photo.
This photo of Ijima's is taken from The Photographic Guide to the Birds of Japan, and compares well with all the photos above

I think it's worth commenting what an exciting record this is. I believe it must be a first record for mainland China as well as Hong Kong, but it does appear on the Taiwan list I have.
This species has only been found breeding on a few isolated islands in Japan, the Izu and more recently discovered, the northern Ryukyu Islands, as shown in this map also from The Photographic Guide to the Birds of Japan.

The wintering grounds are not well known, there are very few wintering records from anywhere but a few from the northern Philippines suggest that it winters there. It seems likely that the Hong Kong bird came from there, possibly arriving with the rain and strong easterlies last Friday.

The distribution of this species in Japan shows similarities with the owstoni ssp of Narcissus Flycatcher, which has mostly arrived here in Hong Kong in late March also.

A really good find, and very well spotted by Yiu - otherwise it would have gone unnoticed

The Ijima's Warbler was still on Po Toi today, although quite difficult to find among the tall trees stretching from behind the Community Centre down to the Upper Path leading to the Temple - see the map here

No doubt some more photos of the bird will be posted later

This bird has not been reliably seen since Saturday 4 April.
If anyone has later sightings, please post here with photos.

Otherwise we will assume it left on Saturday night, after a magical 7-day stay.
Bon Voyage Little Star.
