如 EF300mm f4 + extender 1.4x or EF400mm f5.6 + extender 2x?

I'm a new member. I would like to buy Canon's len to take bird's photos.I saw some members use Canon EF300mm f4 IS USM , others use EF400mm f5.6.Besides, I hope to buy Canon extender 1.4x or 2x. I don't know which one is suitable for me? If I use EF300mm f4 + extender 1.4x or EF400mm f5.6 + extender 2x, which one is good to take photos? Please give suggestion for me.

Thank You!

Can

師姐, why don't you think about 100-400mm? This is a good lens.

I tried these 3 lenses today , I will post the photos later.

P.S. I use 400D too

The following is something interesting from Romy O'con at Pbase comparing the quality of lenses he owns: http://www.pbase.com/liquidstone/300_vs_400

It seems that he uses the F5.6 400mm often for hand-held bird-in-flight shooting and along with the tripod when that lens is coupled with a 1.4x and 2x.

I prefer the 400mm for its manageable weight and the definition the glass of this lens can offer. Perhaps, weight is a factor that weighs high to your daughter when making a decision.

But the 456 doesn't have IS
Anyway , if you think IS is not important , 456 is better

Hi there,

I used 40D + 300mmF4 (with IS) + 1.4x. Why 300mmF4? light enough. flexible - 300mm F4 at the Tai Po Kau forest (poor light condition) and 300mm F4 + 1.4x at Long Valley/Mai Po (better light condition).

Also 400/500/600mm F4 are bloody expensive. 300mmF4 + 1.4x are about $12k

I suggest you go to Tai Po Kau and Mai Po and ask the photographers' opinions. If you are lucky enough, you may try their lens there.

&extra=page%3D1

Agree with captain, although i use the nikon 384.
it is very important to note the minimum focusing distance of the 3 lens :
384 / 100-400 / 456
1.5m / 1.8m / 3.5m
If you also want to use the lens to shoot butterflies and dragonflies, 456 may not be a good choice due to low magnification.
If you only want to take bird photo, 456 would be the best choice because it is cheapest.

If your sole purpose is birds I'd get the EF400/5.6L for it superb glass, fast AF and portability. It's a superb tool for flight shots hand holding! IS is a non issue in this case.

For general nature shots, EF300/4L IS is the choice. Adding an EF1.4x converter you then get the flexibility to shoot closeup too as the MFD is only 1.5m (4.9 ft).

EF100-400/4.5-5.6L IS is flexible of all. But it's push-pull construction and sample variation is too much due to complex lens design. If you're lucky you get a sharp copy.

Hope the above info is useful. Good luck!

I agree with KK.
For lady birder, a light lens is a must, the 400mm f5.6L is the best choice. Dont't burden yourself while birding, enjoy it rather.

I vote for 400mm f5.6. Excellent optical quality and fast focusing speed.
