[Egrets] Pacific Reef Egret close-up

Pacific Reef Egret close-up

The 45x eyepiece allows me to get 50% closer than the 30x.  It makes a big difference.  Neil.

The beak has a well-used look about it.

Given the quality of these digiscoped photos, I think beaks (and legs) would make an interesting subject.
The colour of this bird's beak should change to orange if it moves into breeding plumage. How does the colour change? From the bottom up, or does it all change in one go?
How does a bird change its beak colour anyway - what's the physical process?

As I mentioned after my trip to Cambodia I saw a Grey Heron with pink/reddish bill and legs which I  have never seen at Mai Po. I'm looking forward to watching for the change as the Little Egrets starting "pluming" about 2 weeks ago. Neil.
