Protective filter for scope

Protective filter for scope

I am new around and I have just acquired a scope.  Please advise if I should have a protective filter installed on the scope to protect the front element.  I intend to do some digiscoping with the scope.

I just bought a Swarovski STS 80 HD which accepts a 82mm filter.  I just wonder what birders do, in particular those who have great experiences with digiscoping.  Specifically, I am worrying if an installed filter would result in vignetting.  A quality 82mm filter is not cheap, well for me.

Please advise.

Thanks to Kitty for positive response and the effort of posting references for me.

Thanks to other inputs as well.  Now I realize there are some scopes with no filter thread and some birders are very confident in handling their equipment.
