Little Terns on the mudflats in Deep Bay

Little Terns on the mudflats in Deep Bay

2013-July-14

From the boardwalk hide at Mai Po - three birds in total - here are two of them.

800mm + 1D MK IV

Looking at previous HK Bird Reports there was a July 2009 report of Little Tern at Mai Po, and one at Mui Wo in July 2011.

Hi John,

I found that the Greater Sand Plover in your photo (Right bottom) with leg-flags. Would you mind tell me that is old HK flag or engraved any number on that? Thank you very much.

Is this an effect of the strong Typhoon landing near Fujian?  Some Little Tern breed around there.

Ivan,  -  I think the flags on the Greater Sand Plover were numbered but it was too far to read the numbers clearly.

Ho-fai, - Yes, perhaps the Terns were displaced by the bad weather east of HK.

I think there was a summer record in 2012 as well, so it seems that Little Terns are getting more regular here in summer, even though they seem to have declined in spring.

These birds look like they are first-summers, so are probably not breeding this year (and so may not be associating with a breeding colony).
