Looks like a shoveler hybrid with a mallard or wigeon

Thunderstorm birds

The waders, especially the Dunlin, look great with the raindrops !

The duck hybrid looks like the Shoveler/Garganey hybrid John Allcock saw at Mai Po on 16 March 2016.

Interesting that it has turned up again.

Yes, I'm sure that's the same bird as I saw last year. I saw it twice last year, on 16th and 27th March, and it was also photographed on 19th by 華仔. The coincidence of timing this year is very interesting. I was hoping someone would see it again this year, but I haven't managed to see it so far.

It seems to be slightly more advance in plumage this year than last year, with long black and white scapulars fitting the pattern of a male Garganey.
This is a great picture. It seems to be quite a rarely seen hybrid.

Coincidentally, I saw another apparent hybrid duck at Mai Po last weekend (my fourth there in 3 years!). This one seemed to be a hybrid between Eurasian Teal and another species but it was very, very distant in Deep Bay and I didn't see many details to get a more positive identification.

Really beautiful !!!
