Po Toi Autumn 2017

I think these are Saunders Gulls in winter plumage.

The flight is rather tern-like, the upper wing is very pale grey with only black tips to the primaries contrasting with the darker under-wing primaries, the legs are darkish, the bill is dark and there is a dark spot behind the eye just visible on one bird on another of KK's photos not shown here.

To my knowledge these are the first records of Saunders Gull in SE waters although I may be wrong and it shouldn't be a surprise. But like Black-headed Gull, they seem rather rare in SE waters. I never saw any Saunders or Black-headed Gulls when sea-watching from Po Toi.
