Discuss the characteristics when identifying

Dear birders,
We improve our skill in identifying birds by learning from one another "what to look for" in the field.
It would help if a brief discussion on the key characteristics is given whenever an opinion is expressed on what birds shown in photographs posted in the board are.
Avoid only giving the name of the species. To the newcomer, how the idenitification is done would remain a mystery.
