They are very common and abundant. For me, I don't have a specific type to start with.     As I am still a learning birder and photographer. For, I start with saving money for lenses and bird photography book, then I go to Hong Kong Park to shoot captive birds -- they are easier to spot and the environment is more controlled -- except you cannot use the tripod in certain places.  You learn a lot of photographic techniques too. I go there from time-to-time to refresh my skills.   For free birds, local urban parks (Kowloon Park, Botanic Garden, Hong Kong Park and Victoria Park) are great. Join HKBWS for tours around birding sites in Hong Kong suburb. Also make sure you buy the book " "Birds of Hong Kong & South China" , it is a must to id birds.   My $.02.     Griffin.
