The combination of pale mantle, clean white head and structure identify it as this taxon.   Vega Gull L. vegae, the other suggestion, is very rare in HK, and the structure is not so large and bulky as this. In addition, in the middle of winter it usually has a lot of brownish streaking on the head and neck.   'mongolicus', as it is generally referred to, is probably best regarded as a full species, 'Larus mongolicus'.   As for the dark-backed large gull, it would be helpful to have details of where and when it was photographed (it's obviously not in Asia, and is not any species that we get in HK).   Geoff Logged Richard Bacon Guest Re: Another ID Help Please « Reply #5 on: Feb 3rd, 2004, 4:32am » Quote Modify Remove Hi!
