Is this the Little Ringed Plover in breeding plumage or the Long-Billed Plover? Photo was taken 14/08/05

The balance of probability strongly favours Little Ringed Plover, which breeds in small numbers and is present all year round, while Long-billed is a very rare inter visitor - with just two or three records. It is also worth noting that there is considerable variation in LRPs. This one shows a strong broad superciliuim, the feature most reminiscent of Long-billed, but the bill is not long or thick enough. Also Long-billed plover often shows a brown half collar below the black collar. Cheers Mike K PS I cannot upload the pic, but if you send me a message on this website I will email you a pic of a Long-billed taken in Jiangxi a couple of years ago .
