At Ho Chung this morning I saw 3 Daurian redstarts - 1 male and 2 female. A 4th bid was present, very similar to the female Daurians but no white wing patch. It was very uniform in colour but the tail was darker brown on the upper and white with a broad black tail on the underside. It pumped its tail vigorously. The birds were all frequenting the flower beds next to the stream. I couldn't get a photo - too much netting and fencing. Suggestions for ID appreciated. Thx Andrew

Hi Andrew Interesting! The only other Redstart to have occured in HK (excluding Plumbeous, which is a differentgenus) is Black Redstart in April 95. The next-best possibilities are probably Blue-fronted Redstart or Hodgson's Redstart, but both winter a long way from HK. Could I suggest you check the pix on the Oriental bird images website. Your description of the tail sound rather strange for a redstart however. Question: Was it behaving the same as the others? Fo a very long shot you could also check out the wheatears and rubythroats. Sorry not to be more help Cheers Mike K
