This looks like a tyical Dusky Warbler to me. Why ? 1. The breast looks very dark - right for Dusky, not for Radde's or Yellow-streaked 2. Slender pointed bill - typical of Dusky , not for Radde's which is shorter, thicker and more curved on the top, Yellow-streaked can be as slender as Dusky but can also be shorter 3. Supercilium - long thin and straight, and all the same colour Radde's shows a slightly broader supercilium, especially in front of the eye. This part of the supercilium often shows a rufous tinge, and the rest is not usually so pale as Dusky. There are other features, but these are three good indicators. It should be noted that there are some Yellow-streaked Warblers in particular which are very difficult to identify with certainty, but good clear pix like these make the job of comparison much easier. For a detailed discussion of this difficult group see the 1994 Hong Kong Bird Report paper by Paul Leader (pp170 - 180) Cheers Mike K

Mike, Thanks for the ID! What make me think of Radde's or Yellow-streaked is the end of the supercilium curved downward. Here another photo show it more clear. Percy

Mike, did you ever look at the picture of "Dusky" that I posted that started my Ho Chung thread and if so did you share Paul's views that it was possibly Yellow-streaked? regards Andrew

Hi Percy Thanks for the extra photo This is a good example of why you need to consider more than one feature in hard to identify groups like phylloscopus warblers, an also how different photos of the same bird can show different features. Although the angle of the second photo makes the bill look shorter and more curved, I think it is justthe angle - front-on and slightly above should make it look shorter and broader. Inthis picture you can also see the thin legs which are typical for Dusky and less so for Radde's (Yellow-throated is again somewhere in between). Cheers Mike K
