Great Egrets into breeding plumage

This long distance photo was taken at Nam Sang Wai last Friday. I was surprise to see so many Great Egrets coming into breeding plumage. As this is my first winter photographing birds in HK I was wondering if this was normal and when they would start mating and nesting. Also my book says only about 30 pairs nest in Hong Kong . Where do the rest go? Neil. Nam Sang Wai Hong Kong, China 06/01/06 Olympus 7070 plus Swarovski ATS80HD scope and 20-60x eyepiece and DCA adapter.

Yes, Great Egrets (GE) and even Little Egrets in breeding plumage could be found in this time of year. In 2005, about 120 nests of GE were found in HK. If you are interested in the figures of previous years, pls take a look of egretry count reports available at this link http://www.hkbws.org.hk/waterbird/reportc.html Captain
