Seen amongst a large group of Black-Headed Gulls at NSW today. Digiscoped at a distance of about 300 meters just before the high tide. I see a black bill so could it be a Saunders? Neil. Nam Sang Wei, Hong Kong, China. 31/03/06

Assume you mean the bird at the back with the dark hood? Anyway it's too large, and looks to be just deep crimson. in fact, I can't see any candidates for Saunders's here. Many Bl.-h. Gulls get quite a dark bill at this time, but the bill of Saunder's is much shorter and relatively thicker. Mike Turnbull

Thanks Mike. The other gulls in breed color around seemed to be a very dark brown but this one was definitely black. But as you say not small enough.Neil.
