Many experts in Po Toi today and seems I'm the first one home and publish this interesting bird to the web. Hope some great photos coming from other photographers to help ID this bird. Don't ask me any as I know nothing about warbler they all look the same to me. Po Toi Canon 20D 01/04/2006

The blackish lateral crown stripes and the wholly yellow underparts indicate this is a Sulphur-breasted Warbler Phylloscopus ricketti. If so, a first for HK. Geoff

I agree with Geoff that this is a Suphur-breasted Warbler P. ricketti. The only possible confusion would be Yellow-vented Warbler P. cantator and Goodson's Warbler P. goodsoni of the nominate subspecies goodsoni (recently split from the Blyth's Leaf Warbler P. reguloides complex). Yellow-vented would have an obvious white belly sharply contrasting with a yellow throat and undertail coverts (somewhat recalling Japanese Whiteye), and P. goodsoni goodsoni would not be so uniformly or intensely yellow below and would have dark olive lateral crown stripes (especially in front of the eye) and a less obvious eyestripe. In addition the bill is more heavy and broad than in goodsoni. What would be good though would be a photo showing the black lateral crownstipes reaching to the bill, which is a further feature which eliminates goodsoni. Hopefully there are more photos out there. So, the 3rd 1st for HK on Po Toi this year - what next?!!

Dear Paul Leader and Geoff Carey, I have one question about the warbler. We found the warbler is much more larger than the size (11cm) mentioned in the field guide. It seems to fit into the size between Eastern Crowned Warbler and Blyth's Leaf Warbler. Why is it? Most of us would like to know it. Thanks…….. George
