First Spoon-billed Sandpiper of 2004

The fist Spoon-billed Sandpiper of the spring was among 34 species of wader noted today at Mai Po. It was seen from the baordwalk hides on the falling tide between 2:30 and 3:40. Many waders came onto the Scrape during the high tide and gave good views. Other waders: Nordmann's Greenshank - 1 Great Knot Eastern Curlew - 1 Long-billed Dowitcher Little Stint - one winter plumaged bird Dunlin Curlew Sandpiper Long-toed Stint Red-necked Stint Sanderling - 2 Red Knot - 1 Grey Plover Pacific Golden Plover Greater Sand Plover Lesser Sand Plover - 1 Kentish Plover Little Ringed Plover Broad-billed Sandpiper Terek Sandpiper - 3 Sharp-tailed Sandpiper - 1 Ruff - 5 birds together Black-tailed Godwit - one of the short-billed race melanuroides Bar-tailed Godwit Whimbrel - 1 Eurasian Curlew Greenshank Spotted Redshank Common Redshank Marsh Sandpiper Green Sandpiper Wood Sandpiper Avocet Oriental Pratincole Other good birds included: Black-faced Spoonbill - 30+ on Scrape, 60 + in a fishpond along Shenzhen river Eurasian Spoonbill - 3 Peregrine Eastern Marsh Harrier Caspian Tern - 16
