As I will work near Siu Lek Yuen (near the junction of Shing Mun River and Siu Lek Yuen river) in the next 3 Saturdays.... , I am planning to watch the birds there in the afternoon. Would anyone please tell me the exact birding location of Siu Lek Yuen? Will the birds too far away? Also, if I need to go to Mai Po from Shatin (KCR to Sheung Shui than by taxi), how long it will take?

Issac, I have the following suggestions: a. At the junction of Siu Lek Yuen (SLY) River and Shing Mun River, there is a On King Street Park. Please refer to Betty's posting. http://www.hkbws.org.hk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Birdingtips;action=di splay;num=1101654622 b. You may also move (upstream) along the SLY River. You may see egret, heron, kingfisher, common sandpiper, etc. at the opposite side of the River. c. There would also be birds including wagtails and warblers at the stream adjacent to Hang Seng School of Commerce. d. If you are ready for hiking, you may go up to Fa Sum Hang (花心坑). You need 10 to 15 min. to walk from Wong Nai Tau Bus Terminal (黃泥頭) to Fa Sum Hang. You may see birds such as common kingfisher, fork-tailed sunbird, crow pheasant, daurian redstart and scarlet-backed flowerpecker. KW

Thanks KW for your suggestion. I haven't been to Fa Sum Hang yet. Once a taxi driver suggested to drive me up there as he saw my birding gear. It sounds to be a good birding place.

I walked along the Siu Lek Yuen River this afternoon. Saw little egrets, great egrets, Chinese pond herons, night herons, a common kingfisher, white & grey wagtails. Hope you have a nice birding experience there.
