A nice selection of good birds, especially the grey-headed flycatcher! I saw a brown shrike in this area on several dates in late Oct/early Nov and wondered if it might be planning on spending the winter. It seems that it has! At that time, I thought the site had a certain amount of potential but I couldn't find much else around.

For the benefit of people who haven't been there yet, I think the site might be better described as "The *nullah to the south of Airfield Road". The eastern end is the best, near Shui Lau Tin. And you can walk along the south side of the drainage channel and get reasonable views of birds in the trees on the other side. There are many Chinese Hackberry (Celtis sinensis Pers.) that seem to attract a lot of wintering birds, as well as the flowing water. Always seems to be good in cold weather. *nullah - concrete drainage channel.

| If you are coming from Tai Po take Kam Tin Road to the round about at the east of Kam Tin Village, that is the western end of the runway. Left on Tung Wui Road for 50m and then left on to Airfield Road, you need to drive down there about 2Km (It's not a restricted road). The Shek Kong PLA Camp is on the left and the concrete nullah should be on your right. Plenty of room to park on the side of the road. If you are coming along Kam Sheung Road Shui Lau Tin Village is close, but like a lot of villages, parking might be problematic. Good Luck! John

Pan - You need to get to Kam Tin and walk from there following the directions given above. I think that bus 64K from Tai Wo KCR goes through Kam Tin but I don't know about buses from Sheung Shui. dave diskin

Hello Pan, The 77K bus goes from Sheung Shui down the Fan Kam Road to Shek Kong. Apart from Sheung Shui KCR I'm not sure where else this bus can be found in Sheung Shui. If the 77k goes on to West Rail Kam Sheung Road station, you should get off at the first stop on Tung Wui Road (that is, immediately after the roundabout at the end of the runway). You will still have a fifteen minute walk down Airfield Road. John

A number of buses and minibuses run along Kam Sheung Road eg 64K. I'm not sure if any of these go to/from Sheung Shui. If you get off around Tsang UK Tsuen/Nam Hing Lei/Lai Uk Tsuen, access to the airfield road area is easy via the nullah. Incidentally, also in this area, there is an area of farmland that seems fairly promising south of Tsang Uk Tsuen. I recorded white-shouldered starling and greater painted-snipe breeding here last summer.

Try a red minibus running between Sheung Shui and Yuen Long. The terminus is next to the Cafe de Coral and Jockey Club on San Fung Ave. It is also next to the KMB bus depot. The red minibus passes through Shek Kong and Kam Tin. You could stop at the big runabout before Kam Tin. Captain
