Sha Lo Tung/Fung Yuen 沙羅洞/鳳園 2006 Spring 春

Friday 10 March 2006 06.30 - 08.00 Two Brown Bush Warblers were heard and one was seen well by the old school. Stand on the track by the old school and with your back to the school look into the tall grass. The bird calls only during the first hour of light. By using playback the bird responds and creeps up the tall stems into view. Also seen Bright capped Cisticola Yellow-bellied Tit (by others) Graham

George, This sounds like a very good spot! Could you tell us where exactly you saw the birds in Fung Yuen? Thanks, Mike Turnbull

Hi Mike, Fung Yuen can be separated into these three parts: Fung Yuen Road - along side the road, you can see a stream and abandoned land nearby. I saw the two Monarchs and Eastern Crowned Warbler in there just along the stream. One of the Monarchs was adult male. SSSI area Koo Ka Yuen - the end of the FY Road, you can see a bridge and can cross to the government land on the left hand. The vegetation is mainly cover with shrubs and Trees (Fung Shui Wood). One Monarch and several thrushes were seen in there yesterday. Fung Shui Wood (behind FY Lo Tsuen)- Restricted Area, It is the most producible area for birds in FY and is managed and monitored by Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve (under Tai Po Environmental Association). Narcissus Flycatcher, two Monarchs and thrushes were found in there. Website for your reference http://www.fungyuen.org/html/enquiry.htm The first photo showed how to enter the FY Road. The second photo showed FY Road. The third photo showed turning right to FY Lo Tsuen. The forth photo showed the private car park. Hence, you may park your car at FY Road. The fifth photo showed the location of FYBR center. Hope can help you and other birders. George

I think Black-naped Monarch is common in recent-year winter and regular to some woodland areas like FY, Bride’s Pool, and Beacon Hill (Kln hills catchment). Just in case of year 2005-09 to 2006-03, for autumn migrant, I found Sha Lo Tung, Tai Po Kau, Tsim Bei Tsui, Sha Tin Pass are regular site. For winter, I found FY, SLT, Ng Tung Chai, Pat Sin Leng, Hok Tau, Lam Tsuen, and Shing Mun are wintering site for the year. For spring, I found in FY and Wong Lung Hang (Lantau Island).

Thanks for the detailed information George. Will have a look there on Saturday. I know that the starter of this thread, the fanatical "HK_Twitcher", went today and saw a Black-naped Monarch, a year-tick for him and probably about #225! Mike Turnbull (Year List to date c. 205)
