Ng Tung Chai 梧桐寨 2006 Spring 春

At long last the first signs of spring passage at Ng Tung Chai after a rather quiet winter with almost no new new birds since early December. As usual all birds were seen between the village and the lower falls, with most below the temple today Crested Goshawk - 1 Emerald Dove - 2 (below the village) Great Barbet - 2 calling Grey-chinned Minivet - 2 Scarlet Minivet - 3 OBP - 3 Red-flanked Bluetail (male) - still here Daurian Redstart (female) possible migrant Red-tailed Robin - 2 still here in same places Grey-backed Thrush - 2 Japanese Thrush - 2 (newly arrived) White's Thrush - 1 (newly arrived) Mountain Tailorbird - 1 singing Yellow-browed Warbler - moulting head and breast feathers Asian Stubtail - 1 Blue and White Flycatcher - male (newly arrived) Ferruginous Flycatcher - (newly arrived) very approachable seen about 100m above the village Little Bunting - 8 (newly arrived) Tristram's Bunting - 3 Cheers Mike K

Another good morning between 0700 and 0835: Red-tailed Robin - 3 inc 2 singing "Little Grebe song" Lesser Shortwing - 3 singing Hainan Blue Fycatcher - 1 male Blue-and-white Flycatcher - 1 male Narcissus Flycatcher - 1 male Grey-headed Flycatcher - 1 seen & heard (rather a late record) Chestnut-winged Cuckoo - 1 seen and heard Grey Treepie - 1 heard Orange-bellied Leafbird - 1 male Pallas' Leaf Warbler - 1 Mountain Tailorbird - 1 singing YBW - 2 Cheers Mike K

A little quieter this morning. The onlybirds of interest were: Besra: 1 Orange-bellied Leafbird - 1 male Red-tailed Robin - 3 singing Lesser Shortwing - 3 singing Pallas' Leaf Warbler - 1 singing Mountain Tailorbird - 1singing Narcissus Flycatcher - 1 male, 1 female Cheers Mike K

Another good morning between 0700 and 0900 Chestnut-winged Cuckoo - 1h Large Hawk Cuckoo - 1h Plaintive Cuckoo - 2h Scarlet Minivet - 1 m Grey-chinned Minivet - 2 (male feeding female) Black-winged Cuckooshrike - 1 m Lesser Shortwing - 2 inc one male seen singing Red-tailed Robin - 3 singing Siberian Blue Robin - 1 perfect male Mountain Tailorbird - 2 singing Blue-and-white Flycatcher - 2 Ashy Drongo - 1 leucogenys (below the village) a short walk the same evening added : Little Bunting - 1 Chinese Blackbird - 1 Grey-backed Thrush - 1 Hodgson's Hawk Cuckoo - 1 - the first of the spring heard at 7pm Cheers Mike K

After a braek birding at Ng Tung Chai was quiet this morning, with a couple of highlights: Chinese Goshawk - 2 birds seen above the temple arch Crested Serpent Eagle - 1 Pygmy Wren Babbler - 1 singing Mountain Tailorbird - 1 singing Hainan Blue Flycatcher - 2 singing Yellow-browed Warbler - 1 singing in addition, Hodgson's Hawk Cuckoo was heard calling briefly on Good Friday evening and a Hair-crested Drongo has been seen 2 or 3 times below the village. 2 Dollarbirds were seen on the power lines abve the village this morning. This is my earliest spring record at Ng Tung Chai by 3 days. Cheers Mike K

Interestingly I had three Dollarbirds flying high over the river near the Golden Triangle in the Lam Tsuen Valley on Sunday April 30th. They were flying in the general direction of Ng Tung Chai. dave diskin
