This was digiscoped from about 50 meters and particularly wanted the Golden Plover and the Ruddy Turnstone to show amongst the Redshanks and Marsh Sandpipers ( I think there's a Greenshank at the back too ). Neil. Mai Po Nature Reserve 米埔自然保護區 24/04/06 Olympus 7070wz plus Swarovski STS80HD scope and Sw 30x eyepiece and DCA adapter.

Neil, a nice selection of waders, but I cannot make out the Ruddy Turnstone, do you mean the wader standing 4 birds to the right of the Pacific Golden Plover? If so, then this bird is infact a Great Knot (and I agree about the Greenshank at the back). Best wishes, Ian

Thanks for pointing that out Ian. I saw the black band and jumped to the wrong conclusion. Looking more closely I can see the longer bill and grey head. Interesting that none of the guides show a black band on the Great Knot so is this just a trick of the light? Neil.

Great Knots in cracking breeding plumage like this one do have black on the breast, but I think as this bird is sitting down and the breast is 'hunched up' somewhat it is making the breast appear more solidly black. When I've worked out how to, I'll post one or two of my own photos I took at Mai Po, not that any of the 'proper' photographers (unlike a 'part-time' digiscoper like me) out there should start to worry.
