Monitoring project of Relict Gull(Larus relictus) along the Tianjin from December 2005 to April 2006 Funded by OBC Small Grant and Chinese National Geography, survey team from Beijing Normal University and Beijing Bird Watching Society carried out the monitoring project of Relict Gull(Larus relictus) along the Tianjin from December 2005 to April 2006. Three types of rings on Relict Gulls were recorded during the survey: 1. Aluminum ring on right tarsus 2. Aluminum ring on left tarsus and yellow ring on right tarsus 3. Aluminum ring on left tarsus and orange flag on right tibia All three types of rings were set by Chinese National Bird-banding Center. Type one took the large proportion of recoveries. However, they were not easy to be observed when the gulls were roosting in the water. The second type occurred on the adults indicated that they were ringed at breeding site in Erdos,Inner Mongolia before 2003. The third type only occurred on the first-summer gulls, because this type were just first employed on new hatched birds in breeding population of Hongjian Nur,Shaanxi province last year. Meanwhile, at least ten individuals were found polluted by the oil in their wintering ground of Bohai Bay. The different size stains on the bellies probably form the “natural marks” for such gulls. Most of Relict Gulls have been leaving Tianjin to breeding sites now. Birders and researchers of Northern China, Mongolia and Far Eastern Russia could keep your eyes on these marked gulls. The photos of ringed Relict Gull are posted in follow links: http://www.xmbirds.org/bbs/index.php?showtopic=27134 Good birding Beijing Bird Watching Society ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------
