The fishnets were very close to MaI Po that I never saw before.

I just got a message from Dr. S T TSIM of AFCD informing that they had noted the situation and taken action immediately. About 800 m of net had been seized yesterday but that was just the beginning. In the next few days, AFCD together with the staffs of WWF (Mai Po) shall continuous the action and remove the net from the mudflat. 覬¨ìº®¹A¦ÛµMÅ@²z³Bªº³qª¾¡A¥L̬Q¤Ñ¤w¨S¦¬¤FªdÅy¤W¤j¬ù¤K¦Ê¦Ìªº³½ºô¡A¦b¥¼ ¨Ó¼Æ¤é¡A¥ḺNÁp¦PWWFÄ~Äò²M°£ªdÅy¤Wªº³½ºô¡C

It is good to see AFCD acting to remove the nets so swiftly. This situation has come about because the Government (notably Marine Police under direction of the Security Bureau) has tolerated the activities of mudskipper collectors for several years because "they are not illegal immigrants". In addition to this problem with the nets AFCD have to clear the huts of mudskipper collectors out of the the mangroves several times per year often under the threat of violence by the mudskipper collectors. Sadly Security Bureau has never taken Cap170 the Wildlife Protection Ordinance Seriously and so has never considered protecting the birds at the Ramsar site as part of their job. It is great that we can use the website to immediately post such evidence of negative impact to HK's environment. Just like with bird records it is important to gather datato show the scope of a problem if we want Government to take our concerns seriously. The conservation committee has followed this issue for a number of years Please could people photograph mudskipper collectors or nets or other activities and both post them on this site and inform me directly at mkilburn@hkstar.com.
