For reference, message received from the Ramsar Forum: Quote" Greetings. Wetlands International reports that a new booklet entitled "The Socio-Economics of Wetlands", which was launched at Ramsar's COP8 by Wetlands International and RIZA (Institute for Inland Water Management and Waste Water Treatment, The Netherlands), is now available in PDF format from Wetlands International's Web site http://www.wetlands.org/pubs&/SocioEcs.htm. In the Foreword to this 34-page booklet, Ramsar's Delmar Blasco and RIZA's Bart Fokkens write: "Until it is widely accepted that wetland values can be significant and should be investigated prior to making development decisions, the world's wetland resources will continue to decrease despite many good intentions. The challenge now is to raise the awareness of these facts; a challenge that this booklet takes up." The booklet explains the fundamentals of the socio-economics of wetland values, their evaluation and role in decision-making. The format is clear and accessible and extensive use is made of examples from case studies in different wetland types around the world. It is an excellent introduction to this important subject and provides very persuasive arguments concerning the socio-economic importance of wetlands in poverty reduction and development strategies. The booklet will soon be available for purchase on-line in hard copy through the Natural History Book Service, the distributors of Wetlands International titles (check the WI Web site under "Publications"). Best regards, Dwight Peck, Ramsar. ********** Dwight Peck, Executive Assistant for Communications The Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971) Rue Mauverney 28, CH-1196 Gland, Switzerland "Unquote
