We have received the following message from Simba Chan of WBSJ about the news report of Legal Daily dated 29/5/2003. It reports that the amendment to the "Wildlife Protection Ordience (translation)" by the State Forestry Administration of China will soon start, it aims to stop people from eating exotic wildlife.

針對一些地方濫食野味屢禁不止的現象，國家林業局法規司司長陳根長透露，《野 生動物保護法》的修改將很快啟動，將對禁食野味作出明確的法律規定，並有望以 最快的速度通過。
1989年3月實施的《野生動物保護法》對食用野生動物並無禁止性規定。陳根長回憶，1998年，我國修改《森林法》時，他曾接到許多國外來電，呼籲增加禁食野生動物的條款，當時也有專家學者提出應加入這一條款，但遭到多數人反對，原因是食野味在我國已有千百年歷史。

There is another piece of news in Hong Kong. Donald Tsang, Chief Secretary for Administration has delivered a speech on 28/5/2003 in the Legislative Council. He mentioned the temporary ban on the import of masked palm civets. The Government is considering long-term measures or the approach to add conditions to the permits for wildlife import. Review will also be made on the whether or not to adopte this approach to other wildlife (alive) trade for food, pets, etc.

The Conservancy Association is organizing a signature campaign to urge stop eating wildlife. Target for the campaign is to collect 500,000 signature for the World Environment Day (5/6/2003). Detail information is available at:

Here are some recent developments on the effect of SARS to wildlife conservation from the website of People's Daily:
29 May 2003: Mr. Chen Genchang, Director of the Legislative Division of the State Forestry Administration hinted China would amend the present wildlife conservation legislation to ban eating of wild animals.
1 June 2003: The Coalition of Commerce in China (Zhongguo Shangye Lianhehui) and the Consumer's Association of China (Zhongguo Xiaofeizhe Xiehui) jointly proposed their members not to eat wild animals and to run business related to serving wild animals as food.
3 June 2003: The China Cuisine Association (Zhongguo engren Xiehui) requested all their members (restaurants and cooks) not to purchase, slaughter, store, serve and sell wild animals as food.
