18 Jan is a black day of Long Valley 14 dead birds were found along the boundary of a vegetable field by a group of birdwatchers. Of these 14 dead birds, 11 are Black-necked Starlings, 2 Silky Starlings and one Feral Pigeon. Only the Silky Starlings are fresh, suggesting that small numbers of deaths are going on. X-ray examination revealed that these birds were not killed by shooting. As all these birds are ground feeders, it is suspected that their deaths may relate to poisioning, which is a pest control practice to protect the vegetable against wildlife. Avian influrenza could be one of the causes but it is unlikely that all birds died around a vegetable field. Apart from the suspected poisioning, a mist net was also found. Fortunately, no birds / bats were found. These will be reported to AFCD.

5 locations with mist nets or animal trap(s) were found in one months!!!! There is a reason to believe that mist nets or traps are not uncommon. Mist nets, animal traps, suspected poisoning wildlife...?! I don't want to believe that happened in a civilized place here. They are acts of barbarians!

So the mist net is still there after having been discovered for one week !! Or was it set up again after government action !! In either case, keep reporting!

I've just made a phone call to find out if the action troop of AFCD has received the message or not. 10:00 According to Mr Yau and Mr Choi of AFCD, a set of mist net was found and removed (luckily with no bird trapped) from a dry veg field in Long Valley on Jan 21, 2004. 11:40 In an emergency, please try the following numbers : telephone numbers of AFCD Nature Wardens for reporting any illegal mist nets or any other illegal activities: 2474 8974 or 2476 9430 or 2471 4411.
