米埔水鳥減四成 Waterbirds at Mai Po Dropped by 40%

Waterbird counts by HKBWS indicate that the number of waterbirds at Mai Po last January has dropped by more than 40% for some unknown reasons. At the same time, the AFCD unveil the results of the most comprehensive survey ever taken at Mai Po, highlighting “issues of concern” including water pollution, mangroves, mudflat and sedimentation. The report will be available to the public on the Internet soon.

The air quality around Pearl River Esturary has been so bad in recent years. If I were a migrating bird flying south from Siberia, I wouldn't land in Hong Kong 
Maybe they can't even see Mai Po from the sky......

All,
I was a witness of observing a very poor water quality at deep bay. Since there was a job to remove exotic mangrove at TBT, I went to do a site visit around TBT and SZ river. I observed a very polluted "black" water running from SZ river into deep bay. Water itself was very sticky and bad smell - H2S. We were hard to breath at that moment.
Two kinds of colors, "black" in SZ river and "muddy" in HK side were merged into "dark muddy" at deep bay. I wondered there were still many waterbirds feeding themselves here. The chemical (what kind I don't know) would/could make the egg shell wall thinner or cause a weaker/abnormal chick or shorten the lives of birds.
We have to implement all sorts of control measure for the improvement of water quality in deep bay. Otherwise, not just birds extinct, we human also as well.
In Europe, the water control directive was enforced to improve water quality across country to country. We should learn from it. HK should have a good talk to our mother country - fast and faster la.

Thanks for the report. Would you tell us on which day did you find the pollution? It would also be useful if you could provide some photos to show how bad it was. The digital camera can be a very powerful conservation tool these days, as can be seen in previous posts. You may also like to report this to WWF(HK) and AFCD.

Dear all,
I went to SZ river on 9 Aug 04 and took several photos but I am now considering how to upload to BBS. The pollutant came from mainland so I don't think Mai Po and AFCD could help in any way.

Thanks for posting the photos. I can image the terrible smell and the murky water in the last 2 photos. Wonder how the water quality in Deep Bay is monitored, and whether they know about the heavy pollution out there.
