Mai Po Management Update I am sure you will all be glad to hear that the earthworks in Gei Wei 16/17 (Scrape) are now complete. Works included height reduction of island 3 and creation of a series of smaller islands nearby. This will not only provide a valuable high tide-roosting site for migratory shorebirds, but a roosting site for many waterbirds. We flooded the Gei Wei last night (on the high tide) and will continue water exchange for the next 10-14 days until a suitable water acidity level is achieved. A pair of Northern Lapwings were spotted this morning on the new island. A promising start! We will be closely monitoring bird usage throughout the season. Thank you for showing patience over the summer/autumn months during construction phase. Bena Smith Reserve Officer Mai Po Nature Reserve Bsmith@wwf.org.hk
