Threaten to Mumbai Flamingoes

Up to 20,000 flamingoes, including 15,000 Lesser Flamingoes (>10% of the Asian population) spend the winter (Nov-May) feeding in Sewri Bay, Mumbai. It is arguably the most impressive bird spectacle within the limits of a major city anywhere in the world. The state government has approved a plan to build a road bridge smack through the middle of the bay, beginning early next year. I'm writing on behalf of a small group of concerned birders who are campaigning for the bay to be designated a protected reserve and for the bridge to be re-aligned to the south by 1.5km. Our website describes in much more detail the issues: http://www.mumbaiflamingobay.com This is going to be a very difficult campaign to win - we really need your help in many ways: - please sign the petition - click on the link on the scrollbar near the top of the website - please pass it on to others who would be interested to sign - please send me back your comments/suggestions on the website, and any ideas you have as to what we could do - does anyone know of successful campaigns re bridges across estuaries, or unsuccessful ones (we can perhaps draw parallels) - this is a fantastic site, so please if you visit let us know your impressions. We'd like to get it on the international birding map - anything else - we're new to this - we need your help! Thanks very much, Tim Woodward
