This is the first step of bringing this globally threatened species back to Japan as a breeding bird. Oriental Stork used to be a breeding bird in Japan. They suffered from hunting in the late 19th century and pollution in the mid-20th century. The last wild Japanese bird was taken into captivity in 1971. 1971 was the same year that the Korean breeding population became extinct. Oriental Stork can still be found in Korea and Japan, but only as uncommon winter visitors.   Both Korea and Japan have plans to reintroduce this species back as a breeding bird.
