Reintroduction of Oriental Stork in Japan Dear all, 5 Oriental Storks were released in Toyooka, western Honshu, Japan on 24 September 2005. This is the first step of bringing this globally threatened species back to Japan as a breeding bird. Oriental Stork used to be a breeding bird in Japan. They suffered from hunting in the late 19th century and pollution in the mid-20th century. The last wild Japanese bird was taken into captivity in 1971. 1971 was the same year that the Korean breeding population became extinct. Oriental Stork can still be found in Korea and Japan, but only as uncommon winter visitors. Both Korea and Japan have plans to reintroduce this species back as a breeding bird. At the ceremony in Toyooka, researchers from Korea had also attended and discussed with Japanese experts on precautions of reintroduction.
