Migrating birds were caught in huge numbers by mist nets and sold as meat and pets. The Changdao Tourist Bureau organized the event as a tourist attraction on the Chinese national day. Tourists were allowed to ring birds and then release them. Changdao was designated at a national bird reserve in 1982. A bird ringing centered was established in 1985.
