深圳紅樹林20年面積減半 Mangrove at Shenzhen Halved

An official survey carried out by the Shenzhen government found that the mangrove area at Shenzhen Bay has reduced by 50% over the last 20 years. This was caused by property development, factory and road construction as well as reclamation for cultivation farms. A plan to convert the area into a national wetland park was proposed.

【明報專訊】據深圳官方調查顯示，受開發房地產、建工廠、築路及圍墾養殖等影響，與香港隔海相望的深圳灣濕地面積不斷減少，在過去20年間，深圳灣紅樹林面積減少約50％，而這種威脅目前仍在。調查結果引起深圳市委書記李鴻忠關注，要求加強保護濕地，深圳將改變規劃，建設紅樹林國家級濕地公園，以突出生態優先。

It'll be great news if a genuinely protected area can be created. I know a lot of people in Shenzhen are oriented towards the environment and its protection now and wish them luck in this.
Given the scale of development and the regulatory background in Shenzhen (or lack of any, in fact, it seems to me), it's amazing any mangrove has survived.
