For members information. Quote" The National Birdwatching Race of China The National Birdwatching Race of China is holding today (5th December) in the Dongting Lake, an international important wetland, which in located in Yueyang City, Hunan Province. There are 12 birding groups from all over the Country will attend this race. In the recent years, especially after the 23rd IOC Beijing Congress, more and more people in China go to the field to do birdwatching. Supported by the Hong Kong Birdwatching Society (Mr. Lin Chaoying and Zhang Haohui), the National Birdwatching Database has been established by China Ornithological Society. The Database gathers all the data from the bird watching activities in China. Both the Chinese birders and foreign friends who have the birding records are welcome to submit your records (including the sites of birding, date and time, the name of birders, species of birds you have seen, and if possible the number of birds for each species) to: Zhang Zhengwang at zzw@bnu.edu.cn. Latest information on the Dongting Lake bird race from Martin William Quote" Subject: [OB] Dongting Lake, Hunan province, China Date: Mon, 9 Dec 2002 16:14:40 +0800 From: Martin Williams <martinw@hkstar.com> To: orientalbirding@yahoogroups.com A couple of recent posts have mentioned China's National Birdwatching Race, held at the East Dongting Lake Nature Reserve in Hunan, west-central China on 6th and 7 December. I was lucky enough to be invited to Dongting for the race (though didn't take part in it properly; joined two Hong Kong and one Taiwanese birders who birded the area during the race). It's an impressive place (the weather could have been better, mind you!), with substantial numbers of waterbirds including global rarities; conservation seems far better than in some places - and the provincial forestry department is aiming to encourage nature tourism. While others may tell of the race itself, these notes are for people who may be interested in visiting. Dongting's "star" bird is Lesser White-fronted Goose - some 18,000 of around 25,000 in world winter there. We saw a flock of around 3000. Other species include Oriental White Stork, with up to 800 (we saw just one - the lake's huge, so only managed tip of the iceberg), White-naped Crane (saw one; only one seen in recent winters), Sibe Crane (saw none; around 100 recently, in tough-to-reach area), Hooded Crane (saw ca 12), Falcated Duck (saw around 700; counts of up to 10,000); plenty of other birds in good numbers - eg counts of up to 11,000 Pied Avocets; gets smattering of vagrants - we saw a Bar-headed Goose; Red-breasted Goose has been found in recent winters. Also noteworthy was fact that birds were generally used to people: we passed several groups of Bean Geese in fields near main roads; stopped by one flock of Beans, and a party of Common and Hooded Cranes, and found they weren't spooked when we slowly got out of minivan, even though less than 100 metres away (I'd have reckoned the distance close for geese in Britain). This was a huge difference to the more famed Poyang Lake; the three birders I was with had just been there, and said that cranes wouldn't allow them to approach within a few hundred metres. Dongting's relatively easily reached from Yueyang, less than two hours' from Hunan capital, Changsha. (Probably need to hire car to get around.) If you're interested in visiting (and in trying other places in Hunan - I was told of a nearby reserve with 27 Scaly-sided Mergansers; there are some good forest reserves), contact Mr Gui Xiaojie, Director, Wildlife and Plant Protection Division, Forestry Department of Hunan; email wildlife@public.cs.hn.cn, fax +86 (731) 550 0210. All the best, Martin Williams "Unquote
