For members' interest -----Original Message----- From: PECK Dwight - Ramsar Sent: Thursday, March 18, 2004 6:20 PM Subject: [Ramsar Forum] Student opportunity on extinction risks of wetland birds Greetings. This is a student scholarship opportunity offered by the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) and the University of Bath in the UK. Please don't reply to the Ramsar Secretariat. Best regards, Dwight Peck, Ramsar. NERC CASE Studentship The ecological and life-history basis of extinction risk in wetland birds Supervised by Dr T Szekely (University of Bath), Dr M O'Connell (WWT) & Dr M Kershaw (WWT) Why are many wetlands and waterbirds declining worldwide, and why are some wetland systems more diverse than others? A NERC Case studentship (available from October 2004) will tackle these questions by addressing a suite of research hypotheses using recent advances in evolutionary biology and conservation biology. Testing these innovative and scientifically challenging hypotheses will have a range of direct and indirect implications for the conservation of wetland biodiversity. The student will be registered at the University of Bath although he/she will spend a substantial period of time at WWT Slimbridge. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who is able to learn a range of new techniques. These include phylogenetic comparative analyses and GIS. Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) at least an Upper Second Class Honours Degree in a biological subject. Applications can be made by downloading an application form from http://www.bath.ac.uk/bio-sci/bsps.htm Please include a full CV and the names and addresses of two academic referees. Send to Ms Anne Pearson (bssap@bath.ac.uk) by 12 April 2004. ********** Dwight Peck, Communications Officer The Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971) Rue Mauverney 28, CH-1196 Gland, Switzerland
