Dear Sirs,
I would like to start birdwatching hobby. Could you give me some advice on what kind of equipment is needed? Where can I buy a telescope or binocular for it? What price should I expect?

Basic Equipment
1. A good pair of binoculars
Magnification: 7x to 10x
Diameter of Objective Lens: 30 to 50mm
Prices vary. You can get a fairly good one at around $1200.

2. A field guide to the birds of Hong Kong
e.g. Birds of Hong Kong and South China
Available by mail order from the Government Book Store on the web
(http://www.esdlife.com/gov_depts/eng/dep_isd.asp),
some major book stores (occasionally) and our Project Office

Advanced Equipment
3. A good telescope
Diameter of Objective Lens: 60mm upwards
Magnification: 20x to 60x
Priced from about $5000 upwards.

4. A sturdy tripod for the telescope
All equipment, except the field guide, is available from most photo supplies stores. It is wise to check the prices at a few shops before buying.
Some Suggestions
- There is no need to buy everything all at once. You can make a start with a pair of borrowed binoculars.
- A good way to find out about equipment is to join our outings, where you can try out different brands from fellow birdwatchers and learn about the best bargains (plus second hand offers perhaps).
- Buy the best ones that you can afford, this can save you the cost of numerous "upgrades".

4. 一副穩固的三腳架，用來架起望遠鏡。
除了圖鑑之外，以上所有器材都可在攝影器材店買到，買之前最好多跑幾家格價。
一點建議
- 初學者不必急於買齊所有器材，可以先從朋友處借一副來試試。
- 參加本會舉辦的野外觀鳥活動，可以參考試用各鳥友的器材，同時打聽各家店舖的 行情，說不定還可以碰到器材轉讓的機會。
- 選購負擔能力極限的器材，可以省回一些不斷升級的花費。
