Dear HKBWS Members, Two new bird-watching hides at Mai Po Nature Reserve Black-faced Spoonbill Hide Last week WWF staff finished the conversion of an old fisherman’s hut at gei wai #6 into a new Black-faced Spoonbill watching hide. Although the hide is small (maximum 4-5 people) it will provide fantastic views of Spoonbill this winter as they gather at the traditional daytime roost inside the gei wai. It should also be possible to watch and photograph (at a close distance) Spoonbill, Herons and Egrets as they feed in shallow water when the gei wai is drained in mid winter. Duck Hide In light of the large numbers of wintering duck which now gather at Pond #20, the need to reduce disturbance and also provide better observation opportunities, the storage hut #20b is being converted into a bird-watching hide. It will be completed and ready to use before duck arrive in late October. Also the roadside edge, leading to the hide from gei wai#19, is being planted with tall grasses to reduce bird disturbance as people walk towards the new hide. We hope both these new hides will promote the quality of bird-watching and photography at Mai Po. Bena Smith WWF Reserve Officer (bsmith@wwf.org.hk)
