363.5 White-spectacled Warbler 白眶鶲鶯 Place : Tai Po Kau 大埔滘 Date : 31/1/2003 Bird-Watcher : Michelle & Peter Wong Time : Morning 12am -1pm Weather : Cloudy with occasional Sunshine Temp : 18oC -21oC Dry Dear BBS, Returning from the Red path walking towards just before Picnic area 2, we came up-pong a small bird-wave. Around 10 to 20 feet from the ground level around 30 feet away from us. We noticed a small yellowish under-parts with greenish backed with big yellowish eye-rings bird. It was jumping quietly from branch to branch very fast searching for food. As we were equipped with a camera, we took a couple of shots before it disappeared into the forest. As we were not sure which Warbler it was, we took the photos to one of Paul Leader's Lecture and were able to ask his help in identifying this bird. He considered the bird to be a WHITE SPECTACLED WARBER and told us we must send the finding to BBS. Hope this reaches you without any problem and can't wait to hear from you soon Best Regards Michelle & Peter Wong 2nd April 2003

Peter/Michelle Could you (or Paul) briefly give us the main criteria which indicate it's a White-spec., as I'm afraid I wasn't at Paul's talk. Thanks, Mike Turnbull

Hi Peter, Thank you for submitting the bird record and sharing your bird photos in the BBS. It probably will be the 1st HK record. I will forward your message to the Record Committee for their advance information. However, grateful if you can send this rare species record direct to the Record Committee by using the excel file in the "Record" webpage (http://www.hkbws.org.hk/rarities.html). The email address is recorder@hkbws.org.hk Regards Forrest

Dear Mike, We'll try our best to write down what Paul taught us on that day. Paul told us that there are a couple of points were we can tell it was a White Spectacled Warbler. Firstly, the eye-ring at top of the eye is broken. Unlike the Grey-Crowned, it's broken behind the eye and the Bianchi does not have this feature. Secondly, the grey- crown of White does not go down the nape as far as the Grey Crowned does. Also, the White has prominate white feather at the side of the tail. Lastly, the belly of White is more yellow rather than an orangy-yellow of the Grey-Crowned. Paul, do correct us if we got the above wrong!
