Wow! It got a fair sized fish under his talons too! This bird is unusual to be seen at TBT, isn't it?

I was there, the bird just flew overhead, soooo impressive!!!

1 Hoopoe (sand bathing)
Black-capped Kingfisher
White-brested Kingfisher
White Wagtail
Grey Wagtail
Crested Myna
Magpie
Grey Heron
Chinese Pond Heron
Cattle Egret
Little Egret
Intermediate Egret
3 Black-faced spoonbill (flew by)
3+ Collared crow
1 Black Drongo
3 Silky starling (plus A big flock flew by)
... and ducks (don't know the species...)
(Just for reference. There were more bird species then I listed here.)

BTW, a Buzzard chased away by a Black Dongo

On 16/11/03, from 0745-1100, I saw :
At Mong Tseng,
Spotted Dove (several)
Olive-backed Pipit x8 (with singing)

At Ponds between Mong Tseng and TBR HK border,

White-breasted Kingfisher (again another one)

Grey / little / great egret (many)
Cormorant (many)
Ducks (unidentified)
Blue Magpie x8 (with singing)
Collared Crow x2 (chested away a Black-eared Kite while a couple was making their new home at top of tree)

Unformately, after 10:00, more visitors came.
a. Several groups of hikers passed us by and talking very loudly. They all pretended to understand birds very well. Birds were frightened.
b. Groups of local tour organized by an estate visited TBT. Children were laughing, playing and running. Adults were talking their business in a telephone. Some were looking for a cocrodile. Their tourist guide was using a loudspeaker saying "this is a good place for birdwatching". My friend and I became their model.
c. Before that, I also experienced in Long Valley that several groups of secondary pupils visited this place led by their teachers. They were talking loudly and playing noisy. What they could learn in that event? Did the teachers expect them to behave like that way? I think they are actually lucky to visit this place. (Still, many students do not know where is Long Valley).
It is vert important that we should behave well especially visiting some villages and private ponds. We should not annoy their villages and should be polite to them even to their pets (dog, chicken, pig).
I think the organizer should have a responsibility to teach their joiners to perform well and appropriate during the course of visit. Their guide should at least has a sense or knowledge of ecosystem before "teaching" the members. I observed that some people just did not understand why and what they were coming to see at TBT. They are such a local style of HK people - "yes, I have been to TBT to do birdwatching". But, actually what really saw today?
Visitors should have some basic information about the eco-tour and get some preparation. Parents should take this good opportunity to well educate their next generation - the children. For example, air, water, waste and noise pollution and its control and overall environment protection should be written in their mind.
Just like some family going to see a cocrodile at Nam Sun Wei, they went there just because it was a family day. It was funny. They are only the audience. When they saw a cocrodile swimming. They will speak out "Woo! Wa! cocrodile is funny.". They just did not think about the relationship between the cocrodile, the river, the local residents and HK. Its really not just a show.
Do they really care about the future of HK? If the pollution continues, what they and their next generation will be affected? Government should be in the leading place. Our effort is very few.

Can't agree more with you.
What you describe reflects a common problem with many local people enjoying themselves, at home or overseas. They join tours to fill up their time, bellies and shopping bags, but not their hearts.
Eco-tourism is just another gimmick used by tour operators to draw customers. Learning about culture or environment is uninteresting, too serious and best be left behind in the schools. You get more excitement out of feeding monkeys, catching star fish and witnessing the crocodile hunt. Considerate behaviour will kill the joy - how can you socialize with your neighbour when you are only allowed to talk softly?
If you are not in the right state of mind, you won't pick up any message, provided your guide really has one in the first place.
Are we among the sober minority? What can we do?

Educate ourselves to be a good nature listener and share. There must have people think alike. Don't give up!
