Looks much more like a Bonelli's Eagle to me - just look at the bill size and shape for one thing. Great shot! Mike Turnbull

It could be Imperial, but I'd stick with Bonelli's. Can't really point to a single clearly diagnostic feature, but rather a series of things: the bill while far too heavy for Eastern Marsh Harrier, does not appear heavy enough for Imperial, there's something about the head that doesn't look right for most Aquila eagles (I think it's the rather rounded crown and the absence of prominent gape flanges - yellow skin along the mouth). Also the ratios of primary projection over exposed tertials and winglength to tail length favour the relatively longer, narrower winged and longer tailed Bonelli's. Finally the thing that first said "Bonelli's" to me - a really subjective "jizz" thing, but even at rest this bird looks too dynamic for Imperial. Bonelli's must be easily the most dynamic large raptor we have in HK - a real "hawk-eagle". Mike Turnbull

Why didn't I think of Bonelli's Eagle in the first place?! I would go with your id come to think of it, Mike! As I recall it was definitely smaller than an Imperial Eagle and is of similar size to a Balck Kite ... KK Hui ARPS www.geocities.com/kkhui_001
