032 Oriental Stock 東方白鸛 Mai Po 米埔 05/1/2004 Canon 10D + EF300 + 2x +1.4x It looks like an Oriental Stock to me. But not 100% sure since I haven't seen one before. It was very far away from me when I saw this bird in pond 16/17 today. http://www.pbase.com/image/24832518.jpg

Angus, Congrats on spotting this wonderful bird! It probably is the same bird I saw way back on 4/11/03 at MPNR. Here is a repeat of what I posted earlier ... EOS-10D, EF500/4L IS + EF1.4x ISO 200 Enjoy! KK Hui ARPS www.geocities.com/kkhui_001

Yes, KK, I remember that wonderful shot! I went to MPNR this morning and found that he was there again at the same spot. Got some closer pictures. Of course can't be compared with yours, but I am quite pleased with the pictures and the time spent with this wonderful bird. This bird appeared to be darker and more fluffy compared to the one in your picture. Is it a different one or is it because it is molding #1 A portrait taken at quite some distance. But fortunately it was front-side lighting and cloudy. So quite a bit of details can be seen with the cropped image. EOS 10D + EF300 + 2x +1.4x http://www.pbase.com/image/24872153.jpg #2 I was very lucky to be able to capture this classic posture. Unfortunately it is back lighting. So the bird is quite dark compared with the very bright background. EOS 10D + EF300 + 2x http://www.pbase.com/image/24872164.jpg #3 It finally took off by late morning. I was able to capture a few flight shots (though not very exciting ones) to wrap up the event. Note the very dark face. I was unable to brighten it further without burning out the his very reflective shoulders. EOS 10D + EF300 + 2x http://www.pbase.com/image/24872165.jpg Mai Po 米埔 06/1/2004

These are excellent shots given the circumstances, Angus! The bird is in a rather poor shape as is and I hope you're right about its molding possibility I'm indeed worry after seeing these shots. Let's hope all is well with him/her ... KK Hui ARPS www.geocities.com/kkhui_001

I am posting another picture here for those who are interested. As the oriental stock walked towards the crowd, they all wakeup and tried to back away from him, including the usually agressive grey herons. Perhaps its because of its size. You can see how large the oriental stock is compared to the BFS and the grey heron. He is very lonely. MPNR 6-Jan-04 EOS 10D EF300 + 2x

Nice Shot Angus, Its a pity that there is one BFS right behind the storks legs. Maybe photoshop could remove it? Bob

| Nice environmental shot, Angus! A very lonely bird indeed. Poor soul!!!! I made a trip specially to see him/her this afternoon and managed to take a few images ... I don't normally like shots with the bird flying away from me but this one is more for a comparison (wing top pattern) with my previous one. I think this is the same bird I saw in early Nov 03! Hi Angus, This is Tun Pin, a visiting birdwatcher from Malaysia. I was at Mai Po on same day 11am-5pm. Too bad that I did not notice any stork. That would be a BIG bonus if I had seen one. Congratulations!! Regards, Tun Pin

The bird was still present in Mai Po (Pond 22) this morning, but then flew to Tsim Bei Tsui direction later on. Tung
