Hi Isaac, Like your story telling style posts Unfornately I was unable to meet you that day, but I'm sure we'll meet some other time. BTW, are you using a gimbal mount (such as wimberley)? From what you described, you are locking the head everytime. I am using a Wimberley sidekick and a similar lens as yours (300 + 2x), but I very rarely need to lock the head. Or may be I should to get better results...

Hi Angus, No, I'm not using Wimberley heads. I'm only using a basic ball head Manfrotto 486RC2. If I don't lock the joint, then I must handhold the lens and camera. So I said this is my bad habit , and my photos can't as sharp as others, especially those with VR/IS. Now I just "upgraded" to Manfrotto 501 video head. This kind of heads are widely used by Taiwanese bird watchers. It provides smooth pan and tilt operations. And you can adjust the friction so that it won't slip away when your hand is away from the handle. Well, user still need to lock the head when he is transporting his equipment. I only used it once only but I'm very appreciate about its performance. Though maybe 503 is more highend. For whom interested: Wimberley Sidekick http://www.tripodhead.com/sidekick.html Manfrotto 501 http://www.manfrotto.com/product/templates/templates.php3?sectionid=9&am p;itemid=679 Manfrotto 503 http://www.manfrotto.com/product/templates/templates.php3?sectionid=9&am p;itemid=755

Interesting.... I wonder what are the pros and cons comparing between the gimbal heads and the video heads. I saw someone using a video head before, it was super smooth and seemed to balance very well in all positions. The center of gravity would still shift though when the lens is tilted up or down. Not sure whether this will affect the stability of the setup. It would be interesting to see a side-by-side comparison of the two... Is the video head cheaper or more expansive than the Wimberley head?
