Excellent shot KK. However, it's not Yellow-legged Gull. Confusingly, Yellow-legged Gulls in HK, which are of the taxon Larus cachinnans mongolicus have pinkish legs! The deep yellow legs of this bird indicate this is a Heuglin's Gull, as do the following: a) the streaks on the nape and head (on mongolicus these are absent at this time) b) fairly dark grey upperparts (on mongolicus these are significantly paler) c) incomplete primary moult. You can see on this photo that the outermost primary, which is the longest on gulls, is not yet full-grown. d) there is only one relatively small white 'mirror' in the outer primaries; on mongolicus this is usually larger and there is often two. Regards, Geoff

Thanks for your interesting input, Geoff! Identifying gull species has never been easy, I know. I'm now totally confused to say the least ... What exactly is a Heuglin's Gull? and it's scientific name again please? It's not in my reference books. What about Vega Gull? Anyway I thought I post here another shot taken on the same day/time and probably of the same species too ... Best KK Hui ARPS www.geocities.com/kkhui_001
