Hi Andywegus, Regarding popular names of birds in English. If the names mention about the colour of birds they are usually based on males because the males are usually more colourful and more beautiful. It is especially true for forest birds. For example: Blue and white Flycatcher, Rufuous Bellied Niltiva, Siberian Blue Robin. Their females are dull coloured. Sorry about sexual discrimination on naming bird species !! Bernard.

Bernard: Thank you for your explaination about the weakness of the Hong Kong bird guide book! So, I also get the "Atlas of birds of China" and I've got the answer in Page 271. It has both male and female pictures.

| Hi Andywegus, Naming bird according to their color or special feature is the common practice/norm adopted anywhere of the world. I don't understand why you feeling that Bernade was explaining the "weakness of the Hong Kong bird guide book". Just from the photo, it looks like a Bluewinged Leafbird. Can you provide more description/your observation of the bird for identification, please.

The only naturally ocurring leafbird in Hong Kong is Orange-bellied Leafbird. This is the most likely species, especially at the moment when elafbirds are pretty active. A good place to see Orange-bellied Leafbird is next to the Tai Po Kau AFCD HQ. There is a coral tree in which I have seen a male and a female in each of my last 2 visits. It would be a good place to photograph them as the tree is below the level of the road and the birds are not afraid of people. cheers Mike

Hi! Earlybird: I think it is a weakness cause it doesn't show most the female bird picture and info, maybe one day it will have I think it maybe a Bluewinged Leafbird cause it appear don't have the "Orange-bellied", however I can't show it well in this picture. And I had checked in the "Atlas of birds of China", the picture shows that the female Orange bellied leafbird also have the "Orange-bellied", so I guess it is a different type. But I am not sure, cause I can't find any other info to prove this. Hope to meet this bird again and get a better picture for you to investigate. Dear Mike Kilburn: Thank you to telling me the info, I think I have to put more time on birding research.
