707 Common Pheasant 雉雞 Mai Po Nature Reserve 米埔自然保護區 29/5/2003 This bird was seen in pond 16/17 of MPNR on 29-May-03. Is this a Ring-necked Pheasant or something else? It was quite far away, so image size was small with my D60+EF300+1.4x. The second picture was a 100% crop enlargement of the original photo showing a bit more details. http://www.geocities.com/anguskmlau/030529_8814.jpg http://www.geocities.com/anguskmlau/030529_8814crop.jpg

Yes it is a Ring-necked Pheasant. It is probably a bird which has been released by Buddhists. It is good condition but it should be a bird of hillsides and farmland and there is no evidence that there has ever been a wild population in Hong Kong. The nearest places this bir is seen regularly by Hong Kong birders are at Chebaling in North Guangdong and at Yifeng, on the way to Guan Shan in Jiangxi, but its range extends through most of China except Hainan.
