This bird is a Striped Tit Babbler Macrnous gularis, which has not been recorded in HK before. It's natural range comes no closer than Yunnan and western Guangxi, and given that it is not known to be migratory to any significant extent, it is likely to be an escape from captivity. However, Category E species such as this are still a part of the HK avifauna , and such documentation is important. Well done! Please also provide other details (other dates, if any, when it was present, more than one bird etc) and, importantly, your name to me at gjcarey@netvigator.com so that I can circulate the record around the Records Committee prior to adding it to the HK List. ooops! John Holmes has pointed out to me that this may not be a Striped Tit Babbler. The bill appears too long and thin, and the eye colour is reddish, rather than pale. It looks as though it may simply be a Common Tailorbird. However, the presence of streaking on the underparts and the yellow colour of the latter appear to not be correct. Are there any more photos of this bird? If so, please post them, esp if they show the upperparts. Geoff
